Eric Dane was hospitalized after a fall related to his ALS condition.

Eric Dane was set for a big Hollywood comeback — the 2025 Emmys, a 20-year Grey’s Anatomy reunion, and the crowd’s long-awaited “McSteamy” moment. But when the cast took the stage, Dane was missing. Just days earlier, a fall at home left him hospitalized for stitches — a painful setback tied to the same illness he’s been bravely sharing with fans: ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

In April 2025, the 52-year-old actor revealed his diagnosis publicly, thanking his wife Rebecca Gayheart and their daughters, Billie and Georgia, for standing by him. What began as simple hand fatigue soon became something far more serious — his muscles were slowly failing him. In a tearful Diane Sawyer interview, Dane admitted that his right hand had lost most of its function and that he expected his left would follow within months. Still, he refused to let ALS define his story.

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurological disease that attacks the body’s muscles, making it harder to walk, talk, or even breathe. There’s no cure, and survival times vary. Famous figures like Lou Gehrig, Stephen Hillenburg, and Bryan Randall have all faced it — as did Stephen Hawking, who defied the odds and lived for decades.

Despite the cruel progression of his illness, Dane stayed determined to keep working. In June, he told E! News that staying active in his career helped him stay mentally sharp and emotionally strong. He was even scheduled to present with Jesse Williams at the Emmys — a symbolic reunion that would have thrilled longtime Grey’s fans. But ALS struck again: a sudden fall at home sidelined him just before the big night.

Still, the man once known for his confident charm on screen has found a quieter kind of strength. Rather than retreat, Dane has focused his remaining energy on advocacy, determined to raise awareness and inspire others battling neurodegenerative diseases. “If I’m going out,” he said, “I’m gonna go out helping somebody.”
