First American Pope Criticized Trump & Vance In Tweets — Now Leading The Church

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago-born former missionary and Peruvian citizen, was elected Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first American pope.

Known for his progressive views, he has openly criticized the Trump administration’s immigration policies, sharing tweets supporting DACA recipients and denouncing the separation of migrant families.

He also opposed remarks by JD Vance, sharing articles that challenged his interpretation of Christian values.

Prevost lived in Peru for many years and was an Augustinian leader and archbishop there. His Latin American ties and quiet reformist stance made him a popular candidate among cardinals from both Americas.

Despite his past criticisms, Trump and Vice President JD Vance publicly congratulated him on becoming Pope. Leo XIV spoke in Spanish and Italian during his first public address, stressing peace, communication, and evangelization.

His election surprised many, as the Vatican has historically avoided American popes due to the U.S.’s global influence. Nonetheless, he was warmly welcomed by thousands in St. Peter’s Square. He is expected to continue the reform-minded direction of Pope Francis.
