<p>Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes stated that uncovering the motive behind the shooting is the investigators’ top priority. “It appears the motive is a combination of factors, but it’s too early to pinpoint a specific cause,” Barnes shared.</p>
<p>The police are analyzing Rupnow’s electronic devices, which have been handed over to FBI technicians, to investigate potential warning signs or communications about her plans. “There are always signs of a school shooting before it occurs,” Barnes noted, emphasizing the importance of understanding Rupnow’s online activity.</p>
<p>Investigators are also working to determine how Rupnow obtained the handgun used in the attack. Barnes confirmed they are examining whether the weapon belonged to her parents and whether negligence played a role. “If the parents were aware or negligent, that’s something we’ll have to address with the district attorney’s office,” Barnes said, though early findings suggest no wrongdoing by her family.</p>
